As of September 7, 2010 the Food and Drug Administration has given clearance to market the Zerona Lipo Laser, it is now proven safe and effective for fat reduction. The approval process has taken almost 2 years. The Zerona Lipo Laser has been under the FDA’s review for that time. The approval was based on a 67 patient study.

A good candidate for the Zerona Lipo Laser is someone who already lives a healthy lifestyle, someone who works out 3 times a week, has a healthy diet. The Zerona lipo laser is designed to contour specific areas such as tummy, hips, lovehandles, thighs, arms and even chin. If you have an area that is stubborn, no matter how much you exercise or how good your diet is you see no change than the Zerona may be right for you. Weight loss and contouring will always be about calories in vs. calories out so it’s important for lasting results that you have a healthy lifestyle. The Zerona may be the way for you to have the body you have always wanted.

This is one of our most asked questions and the answer is no. There is no bruising, swelling or pain associated with treatment. The laser is non-invasive and patients feel nothing during or after treatment. There is no downtime or recovery, like with liposuction. After treatment you can get right back to normal life activities, this is one of the biggest advantages to body contouring with the Zerona Laser. We all have busy lives so to be able to continue with you daily routine without interruptions is important to many of our patients. In addition, a lot of our patients prefer this treatment because they can do it without people knowing. You don’t have to miss work or other such events where people will be wondering where you are at, they will just notice the changes in your body, it’s up to you if you want to keep it a secret.

The Zerona Laser is a low level cold laser, which basically means that it is non-invasive.  It does not produce any heat.  The laser penetrates the skin to the subcutaneous fat, which is the fat just below the skin. This is the area it works on.  It does not work on visceral fat, which is the fat between the organs.  When the laser hits the subcutaneous fat it makes the outer membrane of the fat cell very porous and it emulsifies the fat within the cell.  With a porous membrane the fat within the cell leaks out, which causes the cell to shrink.  From that point the fat is pushed into the lymphatic system, which dumps into the digestive system where we will excrete the fat when we have bowel movements. The Laser is very effective at “shrinking” the fat cells.  There are certain things I have patients doing during the protocol to help assist the fat through our systems.  I will be covering some of these things in the next blog.

I want to use today’s blog to discuss some basics of a Zerona Treatment Protocol.  This protocol is done over a two- week period.  During the two weeks there is a  total of six visits (3times a week).  Each visit lasts about 50 minutes.  Twenty minutes of the treatment you are laying on your back and the other twenty you are on your stomach.  I tell patients to allow ten minutes for prep work.  It is important to wear comfortable clothing.  The treatment itself is very relaxing, most patients will take a nap, and I do tell patients to bring a book with them.  During the two week protocol I have patients do three important things:

1)      I want patients to drink 50-70 oz of water a day,

2)      Self massage to the treated area twice a day for ten minutes,

3)      There are two supplements you will take that are very important in helping assist your body to process the fat.

There are changes to each of these that are case dependent and we will further discuss at your consultation.  Results of the Zerona are based on “inches lost”, so we will do measurements to the treated areas at your first treatment, your fourth treatment and two days after you have completed the procedure.  In the next blog I will discuss results you can expect with treatment, until then have a great day.

This is one of the great benefits of the Zerona Laser, in that there are no documented side effects.  We do have patients wear eye protection during treatments, as you do in a tanning bed.  During and after treatments patients should not have any soreness or discomfort.  In fact, I tell patients that I want them to continue with normal everyday routine as they go through treatment.  There is no down time.  As mentioned earlier this is one of the biggest advantages to the Zerona treatment.  Any other body contour procedure has numerous side effects, some more serious than others.  With invasive liposuction there is the anesthesia that has risks, the surgical procedure itself, the risk of infection, and of course the weeks of recovery that go along with it.  With physical exercise there is the possibility of injury, there is the self discipline and motivation, the blood sweat and tears that come along with it and the amount of time it takes out of your life.  Don’t get me wrong, some type of physical exercise is a must for everyone.  It is a very important part of the equation in our protocol with the Zerona Laser.  I am just stating that to reach the goals you have with exercise alone may be very difficult.  The most common patient I see is the individual who already exercises but has those stubborn areas or as they sometimes say “fat pockets” they can’t get rid of no matter how much they exercise or how good they eat. These are usually the ideal candidates for treatment.  So the fact that this procedure is accomplished in two short weeks and patients don’t have to put their busy lives on hold for recovery time or worry about dangerous side effects is one of the appealing aspects of this treatment for most patients.

I did a consultation yesterday for a patient who asked me about having excess skin to the treated area after treatment.  I don’t get this question too often but I did hear it at the beginning of the week as well so I thought I would address it because I know some have it but don’t ask.  The answer is no you don’t have to worry about excess skin from the treated area after treatment.  Our skin has an elasticity that prevents this and since we are contouring problem areas and it’s done over two weeks, it is not a problem.  If you were losing massive amounts of weight in a short time as with invasive liposuction, or as the contents you have seen on the biggest loser, then yes it could be an issue.  At the same time if there is some excess skin prior to treatment you will have the same amount after.  The laser works on subcutaneous fat (fat below the skin), not connective tissue, such as skin.

We do numerous consultations every week for individuals wanting to know if they are a good candidate for our Zerona Laser Program. During these consultations one of the questions patients commonly ask is “…how long will my results last?”  It is important to understand that while this technology is wonderful and it’s great at contouring the body, it is not a “miracle treatment.”  What I mean is simple… If after treatment you consume more calories than you burn, then you will put weight back on.  For lasting results the equation is simple.  The amount of calories in must be equal to or less than the calories burned.  As long as you follow that simple equation your results will last.  This treatment is just like any other treatment, (diet, liposuction, exercise).  In that, it is important to continue healthy lifestyle choices once you have completed your treatment protocol.  There are no short cuts or getting around the simple fact that if you consume more calories than you burn you will increase your weight.  This is one of the reasons that not every individual is a candidate for treatment.  That’s all I have for today, so until next time…
